Seasons

Seasons

by Linda Ellis, © 1997

I think about the years gone by
and those that are yet to be…
experiences my life has brought
that I never did foresee.

I believe life has many stages,
each with its own rhymes and reasons
and I compare these various phases
to the ever-changing seasons.

Our youth is like the springtime,
when everything is new.
Life holds for us no boundaries
and responsibilities are few.

But childhood years pass quickly
and to those memories, we cling,
for they were gone before we knew it
…just like the flowers in the spring.

Young adults go in different directions
like the summer winds that blow;
so much knowledge that they’ve gained
and still so much they need to know.

These years have the distinction
of being the times that we’ll recall
when obligations replaced freedom
as summer days give way to fall.

The next stage resembles autumn
for just like the colors in the trees,
blending together in our mind
are yesterday’s memories.

Following autumn is the season,
when our hair turns white and gray
like the colors after a snowfall
on a chilly winter’s day.

As we approach the winter of our lives,
we learn to accept the truth;
these seasons that have passed before
now represent our youth.

And when winter is finally over
and our time on this earth ends,
we will talk about the seasons we’ve spent
with our lost family and friends.
