American Idol Winner David Cook

American Idol Winner David Cook's THE DASH tattoo

I’ve had many stories sent to me over the years regarding The Dash poem. Some have been very powerful and have touched my heart deeply, such as this one. American Idol Winner David Cook has a new tattoo on his arm. It is the entire last stanza of my poem, “The Dash” and I thank his devoted fans who have contacted me.

The Dash was read at his brother, Adam’s funeral. After battling cancer for more than a decade, Adam died of brain cancer last year.

David, I’m proud to know my words have comforted you and I’m honored they will now go with you wherever you go!

LIVE YOUR DASH!

I heard your poem last eveing at a PSSC district meeting …. I must say as the speaker read line by line I teared up more and more…… My dearest father-in -law passed away a year ago this Oct 26th of Lung cancer….. we were a team through his battle with cancer ,I went to each and every one of his appointments remained by his bedside for the before his death and now I miss him dearly daily….. I sat in that room last night with memories of him flashing before me…. and smiled knowing that the dash between his birth and death date on the stone truly meant so so much more and always will, I will be framing a copy of your poem and placing it on my kithchen counter by a picteure of this dear man who will be forever in my heart and as a reminder of how special each and everday is to make as many memoeries as I can… to tell those I love they are my world to respect ,support and be there for them so someday they will look at the DASh between my name and see so much more…..
You are an amazing lady who truly has touched my heart deeply……
    God bless
Keep writing…… for those words are touching people like me forever….

I read “The Dash” at my Godfather’s funeral yesterday. Aside from it representing my Godfather’s well-lived life, I honestly think I read it more in order to comfort myself. Thank you for giving us something so priceless to walk with everyday of our dash!

I am 79 years old. My children wanted me to write a book of my life because they thought it interesting and for the benefit of my grand children. I desire the title to be: The Dash of a Rebel. I found the poem “The Dash” in a travel magazine about seven years ago and cut it out and kept it. I would like to copy the poem in my book in the Acknowledgement and state the author as Linda Ellis is you would give me permission. Thanks for a great contribution to all of the world and a great piece of work.

My best friend died about 4 days ago, due to injuries as a result of a hit and run. I was at at the hospital she was brought into, finishing up my 12 hour shift. Laura was concious for the last minutes before she breathed her last, and she asked me to read “the Dash” poem to her. Her last words were and I quote, “I lived my dash.”
