The Dash Poem in Baghdad Memorial

The Dash in Iraq

I recently found this article from Victory Times regarding the recitation of my poem, The Dash in Baghdad to honor fallen heroes.  I got a lump in my throat as I read it…

I was on my way to work this morning and always listen to am1070 raido talk commentary the same time every morning, one of your poems was read that just made me STOP THE CAR AND ACTUALLY LISTEN TO WHAT WAS BEING READ, at such a time in my life with economic challenges , people whom depend on me for plain simple survival , I work from 5 am to 6 pm everyday and get hardly nothing as far as money, but My purpose is to attempt to make something happen for the family members that depend on me, my house is in forclosure, my father is on hospis , my mother is 1st states of alsheimers, my sister’s husband has just passed away at the age of 43 YET YOUR POEM PUT ME JUST WHERE I NEED TO BE , and all things in perspective as to JUST WHY IT IS ME HAVING TO DEAL WITH ALL THESE ISSUES THAT SEEM SO HARD, AND WHY ME. I KNOW IF I DO NOT DO WHAT I DO THEY HAVE NO ONE, I thank you for your kind words and truth , the words you speak have truley helped me to deal with the daily struggles of life , death , reality , and knowing that all will be okay, and that NOTHING HAPPENS IN OUR DAILY LIVES BY MISTAKE, there is always a reason, sometimes at the time not knowing that reason, IS THE LESSON I HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY, and the dash of my life WILL READ ALL OF MY LINE AND WHAT IS IN BETWEEN MY THE BEGINNING AND THE END OF MY LINE , all of the line will be read as EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE I HAVE DONE FOR OTHERS — NOT FOR MY SELF . AND THAT IS JUST THE WAY IT IS AND I UNDERSTAND THIS BECAUSE OF YOUR WORDS, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THEM ON THE RADIO AT SUCH A PERFECT TIME FOR ME TO HEAR THEM. Judy

I recently attended a military funeral of a relative in Ferguson, MO. The Untaker there read this poem, “The Dash”, I was so impressed with it, I phoned the Funeral Home and got the information how to get a the poem or copy of. It is a wonderful poem, more people should have the knowledge of it. I am going to order the book from my book club.
Thank you for your God given talent and continue your work and keep on inspiring people.

When people are powerful with words — indeed they are powerful! More strength is available in the sword of using words wisely than in using the actual weapon itself. With the gift of words… also comes great responsibility and you are using it well.

Your poem was read at a Memorial Service on Saturday by the grandson of the deceased grandparents, passing only 2 month
apart. It summed up what life is. Just a DASH. And how you live that DASH is so very important. I want my DASH to remembered for the loving person that I am and at times do not show it. I say thank you to you for the DASH. It truly speaks volumes.
