The Dash
by Linda Ellis copyright 1996
I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone,
from the beginning…to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read,
with your life’s actions to rehash…
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent YOUR dash?

I am reading, “The Dash” as part of our beloved father’s services Thursday. Thank you for writing such a beautiful poem that is so appropriate and perfect for our father.
Says it all, I think.Dates are immaterial, it’s what happens in the middle that counts. Heartfelt.
I would like to say “Thank You” to Focus magazine July 2012 and to Scott Humphrey for mentioning your poem ” The Dash” it has given me some serenity during some tuff times.
Dear Ms. Ellis,
I had to choose a poem to read at an open mic tonight for our Town’s “Imagine Main Street” (a program trying to revitalize our downtown district).
My mad “dash” to find a poem to read was an embarrassing moment for me as I thought I had just volunteered to “read” a poem, did not know I had to choose one to read. My bad.
I am not one to really read poetry and must admit that I do not get most of them. So needless to say at 1p over lunch with a friend, I was a little stressed thinking about how to select a poem to read. I also worried about the delivery. During the course of lunch our conversation turned to doing what was meaningful in life and how you chose what is important to you etc. My friend said have you ever heard of a poem called “The Dash”? I had not, she said “I have to send it to you, it is wonderful.
Back at the office I decided to Google the title and there it was with a link to hear you, the author, read it. Coincidence? No, I do not believe in coincidences… I think I was meant to hear this poem. I understand it and am honored to share it with others.
If your ears are burning at 6p tonight, you will know your poem is being read to my community, on Main Street, in Manchester, CT
Your words are meaningful and are words that need to be heard by as many people as possible. I am off to listen to you a few more times.
Blessings,
Beth Stafford
Linda,
You’ve obviously spent a bit of your dash on a wonderful and thought provoking poem.
I remembered this from years before and used the “dash” to tell the story of my Mother-in-Law, a great woman. She was the only Mom I’ve ever known as an adult.
As we talk about her and share her story with others, her dash inspires them as well.
Thank you for the comfort you’ve brought to our family and the millions of others that have read and/or heard your poem.
All the best,
DR Rawson
I love your poem! It inspired me and touched my life…!
Linda, I’ve watched you read this now about 50 times and your voice echoes in my head with your meaningful words. Thank you for sharing this. It is truly inspirational watching the author herself read it instead of those who share it without your knowledge or even your name! Makes it that much more meaningful.
I love watching you read words you wrote…from your own heart. How wonderful and touching this is. Thank you!
